The accumulation and restoration of the surface humus after the degradation of forest soil by bulldozing and after reforestation of agricultural lands was studied in a top flat area of the Ore Mts. (Czech Republic). The dynamics of humus forms were studied in stands with different tree species, soil preparations and ameliorations used for 20 years in some cases. Special attention was paid to Picea pungens and Betula spp. The results confirmed the considerable potential of tree species to restore holorganic layers. The most suitable trees were birch and alder, whereas Norway spruce and larch were less effective. The least suitable was Blue spruce. Spontaneous processes can produce 1-2.5 t/ha of the surface holorganic layer per year.
