A long-term project based on control pollination of different fir species was established in order to select new interspecific hybrids for specific needs of forestry and Christmas tree production. The results of the first part of this project are presented in this article. The experiment follows a traditional hybridization program focused on the genus Abies. The new hybrids should be resistant to limiting environmental conditions (e.g. drought) and to diseases and pests. Mainly Mediterranean, Asian and American fir species (e.g. Abies koreana, Abies fraseri) were used. The results (germinability, number of cones and seeds, cone length, weights of cones and seeds) varied according to the hybrids.
