Genetic diversity among fifty genotypes of grain amaranthus collected from different geographic regions of India was studied. Considerable amount of variability among the genotypes for all the ten metric characters was observed. The D2 statistic exhibited adequate genetic diversity among genotypes which were grouped into eleven clusters of which six were solitary and the remaining five clusters consisted of two to twenty genotypes. No paraJlalism was observed between geographic diversity and genetic diversity. The characters viz., plant height, length of inflorescence, girth of inflorescence, number of spikelets per inflorescence and leaf area per plant appeared as major sources of diversity. On the basis of genetic distance, cluster means and per se performance a crossing programme involving diverse genotypes is suggested to obtain superior segregants for yield improvement in grain amaranthus.
