The present investigations as conducted to study the extent of genetic variability in eighteen genotypes of soybean in the mid hills of Darjeeling district. The genotypes were studied for three years in the kharif season of 1998, 1999 and 2000, respectively. Data were recorded on seven agronomic characters, namely, J plant height, days to 50 flowering, days to maturity, number of pods per plant, number of grains per pod, 100 grain weight and grain yield per unit area. Number of pods per plant showed a wide range of variation. Plant height and grain yield per unit area exhibited high estimates of hcritability, genetic advance and genetic advance as percent of mean. Number of grains per pod and 100 grain weight showed high heritability values but low genetic advance and genetic advance as percent of mean. Hence, breeding methods that consider heterosis was suggested to make effective improvement for those characters.
