In rabi sorghum breeding, the development of hybrids with significant heterotic advantage over M 35-1, a popular variety, is the prime concern. The present investigation is an attempt to study the heterosis manifested by the hybrids over better parent, checks M 35-1 and CSH 15R.The hybrids were obtained in L xT combination involving newly derived male sterile lines and restorers. Percentage of heterosis for grain yield over better parent, the checks M 35-1 and CSH 15R ranged from -70.72 to 155.24, -65.52 to 117.24 and 77.78 to 40.00, respectively. Percentage heterosis over M 35-1 was maximum for grain yield (117.24) followed by number of primaries (108.98), earhead weight (95.56) and 1000 grain weight (48.52). Similarly, percentage heterosis over CSH 15R was maximum for number of primaries (67.45), 1000 grain weight (59.00), grain yield (40.0) and earhead weight (25.71). Significant heterosis for days to 50 flowering was noticed, which ranged between -1.43 to -12.86 and 1.47 to -10.29 over M 35-1 and CSH 15R, respectively. The crosses viz., BJMS 1A x RSLG 707 followed by BJMS 2A x Barsi Prakash for yield and yield components, and BJMS 1A x BRJ 62 and BJMS 2A x RSLG 707 for earlines were identified as b st crosses. The cross BJMS 2A x Barsi Prakash also showed significant superiority over the checks for early maturity. The result of the present study indicate scope for development of early maturing hybrids with high yield.
