Scientific survey of Malwi cattle in its breeding tract was conducted on the basis of the questionnaire developed by NBAGR, Kamal to collect information on the following aspects:Demographical and geographical distribution of Malwi cattele in their native environment. Information on social, educational and economic status of the farmers. Physical characteristics, description and body measurement of Malwi cattle. Growth pattern from birth to ten months, milk production and estimation of milk constituents. Draftability and marketing of Malwi bullocks. Genetic characterization of Malwi breed using RAPD-PCR marker studies and chromosomal characterization. Conservation of Malwi cattle.The genetic studies conducted on Malwi and Nimari animals grouped them as two different breeds with high degree of genetic divergence. Genetic parameters like heritability, repeatability, genetic and. Phenotypic correlation for various economic traits have been worked out. The study suggests that looking at the large number of malwi animals in the breeding tact the study suggests that looking at the large number of malwi animals in the breeding tract the breed is not under immediate threat of extinction but there is a need for in situ conservation and selective improvement not only at the recognized farms but also at farmer;s door. Fro in situ conservation the University has prepared a list of 1200 milch cows and 156 farmers having large number of malwi animals which has been submitted to Director, Veterinary Services, M.P., Bhopal for strengthening the Government Malwi Cattle Breeding Farm.
