A study on sheep and goat managment in the Fars peovince

In this study, animal husbandry situation (sheep and goat rearing) were invetigated. 750 questionaries form were compeleted'in villages and nomadic systems in proportion with animal number in all regions of the Fars province. Questionaries informations were collected on family characteristics, flock kinds, breeds, rerproduction, feeding, animal production, sailing, animal health, agricultural production, shelter, problems and their suggestion. In addition, information on animal body appearance measurement (body lenght, height at wither and heart girth circumference) were collected and pictures from mature sheep, goat and total flocks were taken. For data analysis, at first Foxpro used for classification of data and then SAS package were used for the statistical analysis. results of this study showed that mean flock population in the year 1996 was 161. In 1996, the flock comprised 71 percent sheep and 29 percent goat. Farms with 50 to 100 animal comprised 26.3 percent of the total farms. Reproduction traits in flock of the sheep were as follows: total mean of lambing 89 percent, and weaning age of 99 day. corresponding figure for flock of goat were as follows: total mean of kiding 79 percent and weaning age 100 days. Mean of mature sheep and goat, mortality in the total flocks were 3 and 9 percent respectively. Sheep were mainly sold in spring and winter with 51 and 45 percent respectively. For goat the higher sale were 54 and 46 percent for spring and winter respectively. Thereore, in this research all important animal traits in nomadic and village systems, type of flock rearing (stud and nnxed), and in different regions of Fars province were studied.
