Effect of polylactic acid on composting of dairy manure

The objective of this study was to evaluate the practical utility of biodegradable plastic as a composting material. Wastes from dairy cow were composted without adding plastic (control), with 10% shredded undegradable plastic (UP), with 10% of biodegradable plastic made of polylactic acid (10PLA), or with 20% of biodegradable plastic (20PLA), and the characteristics of fermentation were investigated. Then, the early growth of Komatsuna (Brassica rapa var. perviridis) planted in soils fertilized with 0, 10, 20, 30, or 50% of each compost were investigated. 1. The maximum temperature and the duration of high-temperature phase were higher and longer in both PLA composts. 2. UP compost showed comparable fermentation to control compost. 3. Chemical components of composts at 79 day were similar except lower content of moisture and ash in both PLA composts. 4. Similar or poor growth of Komatsuna (Brassica rapa var. perviridis) was observed when soils were fertilized with control and UP composts. However, growth was improved in most of measures when soils were fertilized with both PAL composts.
