Effects of food compost application on komatsuna yield and soil nutrient in green house

The authors examined the effect of food compost application on komatsuna (Brassica campestris var. peruviridis) yields and soil nutrient changes using the planter box in a green house, and concluded the best amount of food compost to apply in the green house. Then we tested in the local field. (1) It was considered that the nitrogen content of this food compost was higher than that of cattle feces manure. In the nitrogen mineralization test of the compost, in the early three weeks we observed the nitrogen incorporation to soil and then nitrogen mineralization rate was kept about 10%. (2) As the results of three times cultivations of komatsuna with planter boxes, in the case of 1.5 t/10a application of the food compost, the highest yield was obtained. We needed more than 0.5 t/10a application to increase the soil fertility and less than 1.5 t/10a application to prevent nutrient excess in soil. (3) It was thought that we had to decrease the application amount of the food compost to prevent nutrient excess in soil in the case that EC of soil was more than 0.5 mS/cm from spring to autumn, or more than 1.0 mS/cm in winter.
