Effect of simultaneous light irradiation with blue-LEDs and fluorescent lamps for improving anthocyanin production in young leaves of red perilla (Perilla frutescence L.)

Red perilla leaf (Perilla frutescens L.) is an excellent source of polyphenols, especially anthocyanins, and ascorbic acid. The nutraceutical value of red perilla leaf encouraged us to determine efficient cultivation conditions for this plant that would ensure high production levels of anthocyanins and ascorbic acid. The effect of different irradiation conditions on the production of anthocyanin and ascorbic acid was investigated in this study. At the two foliage-leaf stage, red perilla seedlings were cultivated in a greenhouse using artificial light sources of either blue-LED (461 nm) and a fluorescent lamp (FLB, total 150 micro mol/square m/s) or ultraviolet A (365 nm) and a fluorescent lamp for a 16-h light period at 23+-1degC for three weeks. Fresh weight and total anthocyanins contents in red perilla grown under a blue-LED+fluorescent lamp were 1.4 and 2.1 times, respectively, as much as that grown under the fluorescent lamp only. The correlation coefficient was high (r = -0.88) between total anthocyanins contents and ascorbic acid content of each foliage stage under simultaneous irradiation with a blue-LED and a fluorescent lamp. The results indicate the effectiveness of simultaneous irradiation with a blue-LED and fluorescent light to stimulate production of high levels of total anthocyanins in red perilla.
