The influence of varieties on the yield and growth in winter and autumn in half-forcing long term crop cultivation of asparagus (Asparagus officinalis L.)

Compared with 'welcome', 'sanukinomezame' cultivated in the same location have a quicker germination, stronger plant vigor, and produce larger yield. Therefore, it is necessary to establish a cultivation technique to promote the characteristics of this variety. Consequently, with the varietal difference in the foliage etiolation that occurs during fall and winter, we studied the influence that the time when the matured stems are cut at etiolation exerts on the quality and yield amount of the spring shoots, as well as the influence that the height of mature stems has on the quality and yield amount of both summer/fall and spring shoots, and we discovered the following results. 1. Compared with 'welcome', the 'sanukinomezame' had later foliage etiolation in the fall-winter period, particularly, the completion was more than 20 days later. 2. Regardless of variety, as the foliage etiolation of the cutting of the matured stem advanced, the yield amount over the following spring increased, but was the largest when the degree of foliage etiolation was over 80-85%. 3. With the 'sanukinomezame' variety, as the mature stem length was longer, the yield for both the summer/fall and spring shoots increased, and was dramatically reduced for shorter stem lengths. This tendency was more pronounced in the 'sanukinomezame' variety relative to the 'welcome' variety.
