Effects of internal checks caused by high-temperature drying on mechanical properties of sugi [Cryptomeria japonica] squared sawn timbers: Bending strength of beam and resistance of bolted wood-joints

In this study, bending strength of beam and resistance of bolted wood-joints were studied in order to clarify the effect of internal checks on mechanical properties of 120 mm x 240 mm sugi (Cryptomeria japonica D. Don) squared sawn timbers. Based on size and number of internal checks the high-temperature dried sugi materials were classified into 4 grades. They were used for this study. The results are summarized as follows; (1) Grade of internal checks had a significant effect on bending strength, but no significant effect on Young's modulus. (2) Grade of internal checks had a significant effect on the tensile resistance of bolted wood-joints.
