Meeting the challenges caused by transnational democracy of the EU

Along with the development of globalization processes and the increase of their impact on political processes within the boundaries of a single national state, the transnational democracy theory strengthened its role in academic discourse mainly in Europe and the USA. So far one of the most comprehensive academic views on transnational democracy theory was presented by four theoretical ideal-type models: the liberal internationalism model, the radical democracy pluralism model, the cosmopolitan model, and the deliberative democracy model. The aim of these four theoretical models is to reveal the decision-making process on the global level, bringing citizens that are possibly affected by those decisions closer to the political process. Nevertheless, the possible implications that the practical embodiment of those models has on national sovereignty and the development of 'national' democracy should not be neglected. Taking into account already existing and possible future trends in the development of transnational democracy in the EU, the development of democracy in Latvia depends on the way that national institutions meet the challenges posed by EU transnational democracy.
