Barley protein composition affected by genotype and nitrogen fertilisation level

The objective of this study was to compare the absolute content of amino acids (AA) (g kgE-1 DM), their relative amount (g 16g NE-1) and the amount of hordein fraction (Integral Optical Density units) in covered and hull-less spring barley genotypes grown under different rates of N fertilization. Field experiments were carried out at the State Stende Cereal Breeding Institute in 2005 and 2006. Covered barley varieties ' Ansis' (malt type), 'Linga' (feed type) and hull-less barley lines L-302 (Latvia) and KM 2084 (Czech Republic) were used in the experiments. Application rates of ammonium nitrate were 0, 60 and 90 kg N haE-1. The content of crude protein (CP) significantly differed between varieties (p is less than 0.05). It ranged from 119.5 g kgE-1 to 177.4 g kgE-1. Increase of CP content in a grain enhanced the absolute content of AA, but decreased the relative amount of AA. This depended on both genotype and applied N rate (p is less than 0.05). The absolute content of AA did not differ within covered varieties but it was significantly lower than for hull-less lines. Relative amount of AA was higher (p is less than 0.05) for covered varieties than for hull-less lines. For a barley genotype, the higher protein content, the higher hordein quantity in protein.
