Effect of phosphatic fertilizers on yield and chemical composition of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

The study was conducted to evaluate the effect of source and time of phosphatic fertilizers application on yield and chemical composition of wheat. The soil of the experimental area was heavy in texture, non-saline (EC=0.75 to 0.83 dSm-1), alkaline in reaction (pH=7.46 to 7.66), calcareous (11.54 to 11.76 %) in nature, medium to poor in organic matter content (0.88 to 0.74 %) medium to low in available phosphorus, 3.93 to 2.00 mg per kg and adequate in exchangeable potassium (121.78 to 181.50 mg per kg). It was observed from the plant data that the effect of source, time and interaction of source x time was mostly non-significant. The application of DAP at sowing as a basal dose was more effective than MAP for plant height spikes length, ear-heads potassium in straw and magnesium both in straw and grain. Compared to the DAP, the plants treated with MAP fertilizer at 1st irrigation had more number of tillers, maximum 1000 grain weight and produced higher grain and straw yields than DAP. Therefore, the results suggested that, the phosphatic fertilizes should be applied at planting. However, they may be applied at 1st irrigation, if missed at planting. DAP fertilizer should be applied at sowing as a basal dose. Whereas, at 1st irrigation MAP fertilizer may be applied, if missed at planting.
