Variability in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) genotypes for earliness

A study was carried out in the Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics, University of Agriculture Faisalabad, Pakistan during 2004. Fifty one cotton genotypes were tested for node number for first fruiting branch and days to first boll opening. The results showed significant differences for both characters. FH-901 had significantly the lowest nodes for first fruiting branch (6.05) and was rated as early maturing variety. MNH-93 appeared to be a late variety. FH-901 and NIAB-999 took minimum days after planting (91.17 and 91.43) for first boll opening, and proved early maturing as compared to other genotypes. MNH-93 opened its first boll after 106.8 days of planting and was recorded as the most late maturing. This variability in two characters may be useful to develop early maturing cotton varieties through selection in cotton breeding programmes.
