Macronutrient uptake and yield of wheat in relation to weed competition

A field experiment was conducted to see the effect of weed competition on macronutrient uptake and yield of wheat. The soil of the experimental area at both depths was clay in texture, non saline, moderately alkaline in reaction with high K and low OM and P contents. The results revealed that presence of weed for full growing season decreased plant height, number of tillers/m2, number of grains/plant, 1000 grain weight, straw and grain yields, contents and uptake of P and K in straw and grain. Removal of weeds at early stage by hand weeding and herbicides increased all the growth and yield parameters, and nutrient contents and uptake. The result of the study showed the adverse effect of weeds on normal growth of wheat. Presence of weeds for full growing season had greatest adverse effect. The removal of weeds at early stage by hand and or herbicide remained more effective than other treatments. Therefore, it is suggested that hand weeding should be done at early stage either by hand or by herbicide.
