Performance of sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) applied under different kinds of organic fertilizers under greenhouse condition

Most Philippine soils are now degraded, acidic, low in organic matter, and deficient in zinc and sulfur due to the continuous use of urea fertilizer. More recently however, there has been a shift of fertilizer usage from inorganic to organic materials. This research was conducted to evaluate the growth and yield performance of sweet pepper applied with different kinds of organic fertilizers under greenhouse conditions. The treatments of the study were composed of the organic fertilizers: Sagana 100 (S100); ASU vermicompost (ASUV); Templonuevo vermicompost (TV); and rice straw compost with effective microorganism (RSCEM). The treatments were replicated three times and laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). Results revealed that plant height and number of days to flowering were influenced by the application of organic fertilizers. Plants treated with RSCEM were tallest at 123.20 cm and flowered early at 31.09 days. Likewise, plants applied with S100 and TV comparably performed better than the ASUV and RSCEM in terms of number and weight of harvested fruits and number of marketable fruits per plant. Moreover, a higher ROI was obtained from plants applied with S100 (33.96%) and TV (24.30%). In general, the growth and yield of plants were significantly affected by the application of organic fertilizers. The results of the study suggest that it is possible to substitute inorganic fertilizers with organic fertilizers without sacrificing plant growth and yield. The use of S100 and TV are recommended for better growth and yield of sweet pepper.
