Information management and sharing across globally-dispersed data sources is a primary concern within the Generation Challenge Programme (GCP; http://www.generationcp.org), a research consortium directed towards crop improvement through the application of comparative biology, characterization of genetic resources and plant breeding. To enable interoperability of data and analysis flows between GCP research projects, a crop bioinformatics platform was developed, inclusive of shared public domain models, middleware reference implementations, web services and registry technologies (http://pantheon.generationcp.org). This GCP platform has been integrated into a suite of public databases and software tools found in web and standalone applications to facilitate biodiversity analysis, comparative analysis of crop genomic data, and plant breeding decision making. One example of this is next-generation web portal of the International Crop Information System (ICIS; http://www.icis.cgiar.org) under development using GCP platform standards, to provide the functionality of a search engine for retrieval of crop data from implementations of the ICIS databases.
