'Rice yellowing syndrome' associated with the outbreak of brown planthopper (BPH) Nilaparvata lugens in Mekong River Delta, Vietnam

During the outbreaks of BPH in Vietnam from 2005 to 2006, rice production in the Mekong River Delta suffered a less of 400,000 tons (1.1% of total rice production in Vietnam) . 'Hopperburn' due to the heavy infestation by BPH and plant exhibiting so-called 'yellowing syndrome' were commonly observed in the affected areas. Plants affected by the yellowing syndrome showed symptoms of yellowing and bronzing of leaves, stunted growth and eventual death. The epidemological characteristics of the disease indicated the involvement of viruses possibly transmitted by BPH which were prevalent in the area. To identify the causal agents of the yellowing syndrome, rice leaves and BPH collected in the Mekong River Delta were examined for infection with viruses associated with BPH by ELISA and RT-PCR. Rice grassy stunt virus (RGSV) and rice ragged stunt virus (RRSV) were detected from both rice leaves and BPH either singly or dually. Collectively these results suggest tha the yellowing syndrome is associated with RGSV and RRSV, although the symptoms appeared to vary depending upon varieties, virus species infecting and timing of infection.
