Water quality and biochemical components of Hydroclathrus clathratus in the tidal shore area of St. Martin's Island, Bangladesh

The intertidal area of St. Martin's Island is a fertile place for algal growth in Bangladesh. Water quality parameters in Hydroclathrus clathratus growing area (Latitude 20 degree 37 N and Longitude 92 degree 19 E) were recorded during March 2005. During this period different parameters were found to be temperature 21.5 plus minus 0.41 degree C, salinity 33 plus minus 0.71 per mille, pH 7.8 plus minus 0.08, dissolved oxygen (DO) 5.3 plus minus 0.14 mL/L NO2-N 0.297 plus minus 0.0035 mug/L, PO4-P 0.347 plus minus 0.0054 mug/L, alkalinity 93.67 plus minus 0.43 per mille, total dissolved solids 369.63 plus minus 8.81 mg/L and total suspended solids 114.42 plus minus 0.97 mg/L accordingly. The biochemical components of H. clathratus were determined on wet and dry weight basis, and the percentage composition were found to be protein 6.39 plus minus 0.41%, fat 2.18 plus minus 0.036%, ash 6.47 plus minus 0.25%, moisture 59.63 plus minus 2.24%, crude fibre 2.70 plus minus 0.14% and nitrogen free extract 22.63 plus minus 2.49% on wet weight basis. Oil content was recorded 2.215 plus minus 0.155 g/kg and 2.97 plus minus 0.21 g/kg on wet and sun dry weight basis accordingly. The results indicate that due to high percentage of sodium alginate, high oil contents and also rich nutritional constituents in H. clathratus, it may be used as food and food additive, as an ingredient of valuable pharmaceutical products, and for oil extraction.
