Development of desirable soil potting mix for growing tissue-cultured Lakatan (Musa acuminata L.) plantlets

A banana crop stand is defined by the quality of the soil and seedlings. Good quality soil and seedlings will eventually result to better crop yield. With these indicators, an experiment was conducted to test five media proportions of garden soil (GS), compost (C) and sand (S) to develop a desirable soil mix in growing tissue-cultured lakatan plantlets. The treatments were the proportions of soil mix (GS + C + S): 1:1:1; 1.5:0.5:1, 1.25:0.75:1; 0.75:1.25:1 and 0.5:1.5:1, replicated three times and laid out in RCBD. Plant growth was monitored up to 90 days after potting (DAP). Results of the study indicated that plant height, base circumference, number, length and width of leaves were not influenced by the different proportions of soil media. At 90 DAP however, the number and width of leaves developed were affected. Plants grown in soil mix composed of 0.50 part GS + 1.5 parts C + 1 part S, 1.25 parts GS + 0.75 part C + 1 part S and 1 part GS + 1 part C + 1 part S comparably developed more leaves than the other plants. On the other hand, plants grown in soil mix comprised of 1.5 parts GS + 0.50 part C + 1 part S developed narrower leaves (13.50 + 13.97 cm) compared to the rest of the plants. Results imply that regardless of the soil mix used, lakatan plantlets grow satisfactorily as long as the three standard media (GS + C + S) are contained in the potting mix. Thus it is recommended that lakatan plantlets be grown in a medium containing three standard media of any proportion with appreciable amount of nutrients.
