Sticky board traps for mass trapping and monitoring of leaf miner Liriomyza trifolii (Burgess) on onion

Different colors of sticky board traps were evaluated to determine the most attractive to adult L. trifolii flies in the field. Yellow sticky board traps caught significantly more adult flies compared to blue, purple, and white colored board traps. In a follow up experiment, yellow sticky board trap was evaluated as a component in the management of L. trifolii by mass trapping adults. Sticky yellow board traps (16 x 16) were installed 60 cm above ground and distanced 5 meters apart in half of the field. The remaining half of the field was the control. The adult flies caught were counted and recorded weekly starting at one week after transplanting until harvest. Leaves damaged by leaf miner (incidence) and number of mines per leaf (severity) were monitored on 50 randomly selected plants from transplanting to one week before harvest. Adults were detected in the sticky board traps as early as 2 weeks after transplanting. An early peak in adult leaf miner catch was recorded at 21 days after transplanting (DAT). A second and much higher peak occurred at 63 DAT. In all sampling occasions, percentage of damaged leaves and number of mines per leaf were lower in the portion with sticky board traps than in the half of the field without the traps. The study demonstrated that yellow sticky board traps could be incorporated in the management strategy against onion leaf miner adults in the field and possibly to monitor adult population for effective timing of control inventions.
