Some observations on light and scanning electron microscopic study of an ascarid nematode Contracaecum sp. (Nematoda: Filucapsulariinae) from the little cormorant

Present study reveals observations on light and scanning microscopic study of an Ascarid nematode Contracaecum sp. found parasitizing in the stomach of the little cormorant Phalacrocorax fuscicollis, shot down near the fish rearing farms in Thatta district, Sindh, Pakistan. These are stout worms of moderate size. The lips or labia appear to be roughly rectangular in shape with a pair of labial papillae on the anterior border of each lip. The cuticle is thick with prominent transverse striations inflatted at the base of the lips. The oesophagus is highly muscular with a posterior short ventriculus and an intestinal caecum. The spicules are stout, alate and unequal. Caudal papillae are numerous. The vulva opening is in the anterior half of the body, eggs are small and thin shelled. The tail tips in both sexes are conical.
