2006
Largo, D.B. | Critchley, A.T. | Ohno, M.
This is a DVD compilation, presenting a wealth of varied information about seaweeds. The project is exceptionally fortunate to have attracted contributions from seaweed experts worldwide, a number of whom will be at this meeting. Authors have generously provided their insights, knowledge and experience to collate detailed accounts and summaries of recent developments in their specialized fields, falling into these major categories: 1) Seaweed resources from around the world, on a regional and country-by-country basis. Where appropriate information is included on actual and potential utilization and cultivation. Some species lists and comments on taxonomy are provided. 2) Developments in applications and uses of seaweeds, including human health, wellness and cosmetic benefits of seaweeds, and industrial applications of extracts. 3) Demand for seaweed raw materials has required management and harvesting from natural stocks and intensive and extensive cultivation of algae for the large biomass required for industrial applications, and many aspects of these operations are covered in detail. 4) There are some really exciting developments where specific extracts and components of seaweeds can make major contributions to improve human health and reduce the transmission of disease. The information provided in Seaweed Resource is intended to be of interest to the broadest possible audience, from those studying biology and marine ecology, to advanced students of phycology, managers of marine resources and also commercial and industrial users of seaweeds as raw materials for processing. Selected highlights of the package will be demonstrated during the presentation.
