Morphological diversity of Musa balbisiana in the Philippines
2007
Sotto, R.C. | Rabara, R.C.
A total of 97 accessions of Musa balbisiana collected from 22 provinces of the country were morphologically characterized using the IPGRI [International Plant Genetic Resources Institute] Descriptors test for Banana. Morphological characterization was done in order to determine the degree or morphological variation present in the collection. One-hundred-nineteen whole plants, male bud and fruit characters were morphologically characterized resulting to 19 invariant and 100 variant characters. The invariant characters could be used in the identification of this species. The variant characters, on the other hand, had standardized Shannon-Weaver diversity indices that ranged from 0.087 to 0.999. High diversity indices (H10.7) were observed in 58 characters. Cluster analysis revealed six clusters when the dendrogram generated from UPGMA clustering was truncated at 8.02 Euclidean distance. Substantial diversity was observed in the collection.
