The study was conducted during the years 2000-2003 on a population of the European bison from captive and free-ranging herds in the Bialowieza Forest (Poland). The experimental materials consisted of samples of blood, hair coat and natural diets of bison as well as feedstuffs additionally fed to the animals. The serum levels of biochemical parameters: glucose, total protein, albumins and urea as well as minerals: Ca, inorganic P, Na, K and Mg were determined. The concentrations of Ca, P, Na, K and Mg were determined in feed. High serum glucose levels and low serum albumin levels, out of the reference ranges for cattle, were recorded. Lower serum urea levels and higher serum concentrations of Na and K were observed in bison from captive herds, in comparison to free-living animals
