Strawberry plant performance depending on weed infestation by annual bluegrass (Poa annua L.)

The experiment wa carried out in order to determine the carry-over effects of grass (P. annua) community (GC) at the density of 11 and 22 plants/square M present in strawberry planting of cvs Kama and Senga Sengana, on vegetative growth, cropping and fruit quality compared to weeded out (KP) and clean cultivation - weed free (KO) systems. No differences in strawberry plant diameter were found relative to soil management (SM). One-year old plants of both cultivars and plants of Senga Sengana grown significantly more vigorously in Gc at 22 plants/square m in comparison with either KP or KO. In the case there was a tendency in both cultivars towards induction of more crowns, leaves, flowers and lesser number of runners as compared to KO plants. None of the SM systems has significantly influenced productivity of examined strawberry plants. The KO plants showed some reduction in the size of yields of c. 9.5 - 10.0 percent in comparison with KP plants. Plants of cv. Kama grown less vigorously, than those of cv. Senga Segana, thus, the habitat of KP system created friendly environment, which contributed to increasing the yields of KP of about 9.5 percent in comparison with that of KO. For maintaining an adequate cropping level of Senga Sengana, the GC system at either 11 or 22 plants/square m contributed to increase yields of c. 15.2 and 16.5 percent, respectively, as compared to KO
