2006
Abou Moghli, M.
The main objective of this research was to explore water conditions n the West Bank in relation to poverty levels at both the Macro and Micro levels through the calculations of various indices namely: the Water Availability Index (WAI), the Basic Human Needs Index (BHNI,. and the Water Poverty Index (WPI). And proposing policies that consider the needs of the poor; helping them to fulfilling their basic water needs. Through this research it was found that, at the Macro level, there is a large gap between demand for water and supply of this vital natural resource. The main reasons for this gap are lack of accessibility, low capacity and, most important, the lack of control over the resources. The availability of water is not the source of the problem as in other countries. When the Palestinians get their independence and their water rights, their water conditions will dramatically change. At the Micro level, the low income of people and their weak social status play a big role in increasing the severity of the problem. In this study scenarios were proposed it order to show various possibilities for future water conditions in the West Bank. Regarding the main component of this research, which was to calculate the Water Poverty Index (WPI) the best approach, was found to be the Holistic approach. The result obtained was WPI= 43 .27%, which indicates that the region faces a severe water problem.
