2006
Mitwasi, J.
The huge impact of tourism in the Mediterranean has not been thoroughly examined nor fully appreciated, despite the increasing trend in tourism in this region. This study starts by clearly identifying the Mediterranean Region, the tourism and its importance for this region. It explains tourists' motivation and how people choose the Mediterranean as a tourist destination. This paper also examines the causes and effects of tourism in the Mediterranean Region using PEST Analysis. Finally the main aim of this research is to develop and implement a newly integrated methodology for the evaluation of the overall tourism performance of selected countries of the world. The multicriteria analysis outranking-method (PROMETHEE II) is used to examine six Mediterranean countries. The results derived from the analysis of an overall ranking of the examined countries are provided by identifying the strong and weak points of each country. Assessment of these results is essential to enable tourism professionals to make recommendations regarding marketing strategies, government policies and economic strategies. This study also proves that the adopted multicriteria evaluation and ranking methodology can be successfully used in a comparative study among countries based on different criteria. The study concludes with a discussion of how future research might be directed.
