2006
Juba, S.
In the context of promoting best practices in Territorial and Environmental Impact Assessment (TEIA), Web-based GIS applications provide a valuable support tools for implementing European policy and facilitate the accessibility, analysis, and dissemination of geospatial information. Researchers, stakeholders, as well as users of automated Decision Support Systems, all benefit from the capability to share large, up-to-date geospatial data sets with minimal effort and cost. Within this work, open-source (OSS) and open standards (OGC) based software packages were integrated to develop a Web-based GIS mapping portal for TEIA applications. Open-source software offers a level of flexibility, availability and lowered cost that is typically unavailable with commercial software. Additionally, an architecture and design based on Open Standards, ensures system interoperabilty and data reusability.
