This thesis is based on the recollection and identification of the olive tree (Olea europaea L.) varieties, which grow in the traditional zones of cultivation of the Province of Catamarca, Argentine Republic, with particular interest in their further conservation in the Germplasm Bank of the INTA, Catamarca. The prospecting area is located in the region called Argentinean Northwest (NOA) among the parallel ones 25 ant 29 degrees of South latitude and among 69 _ 65 degrees to the West of the Greenwich. An initial prospecting expedition was carried out and the province was divided in four different zones, with homogeneous climatic and soil conditions; following the interviews with farmers, 111 individuals belonging to 66 different denominations were marked. A morphological scheme with 29 characters of the tree, leaf, fruit and endocarp, was used to characterize the material gathered in the expedition. 62 varieties were identified (15 correspond with varieties of known Spanish, Italian and Greek origin). Various synonyms, homonyms and naming errors were discovered. Once the varieties were identified they were introduced in the Germplasm Bank of the Experimental Station Farming Catamarca of the INTA, located in Sumalao, Department Valle Viejo, Province of Catamarca, Argentina. The data obtained from the prospecting and identification, along with pertinent bibliographical information, was used to construct a monograph of the 14 main varieties, the secondary and the diffuse varieties that are traditionally cultivated in the province of Catamarca, Argentina, which included: 1) the technical description of each variety and 2) an index of all of the variety denominations found in the prospecting expedition or mentioned in the bibliography
