The researches were undertaken in permanent experimental plots established in Sacele, Brasov, Rasnov and Zarnesti forest districts, in quasi-virgin mountain forest ecosystems including Norway spruce forests, Norway spruce-beech mixtures, Silver fir-beech mixtures, beech-conifer mixed forests and pure beech forests. In each experimental block treee dimensional and quality data were collected (including data for dead and wind-thrown trees), as well as the characteristics of the other vegetation layers, and physiographic and soil data. Based on the field investigations some results and conclusions regarding the stand composition variation, tree number (including the percentage of dead wood), slenderness index, branch-free length of the stems and the production capacity are presented. The paper also presents the development dynamics of quasi-virgin mountain forest ecosystems and the opportunities for continuing and expanding the researches of such ecosystems.
