During the period of 2002-2007, the analysis of the impact of growth site (Gorobilje, Kacarevo, and Pancevo, Serbia) and storage mode (paper-natron, juta, and PVC bags) upon the germination energy and total germination of seed of Echinacea purpurea was conducted. Seed purity of 99% and moisture content of 9% were obtained with the material produced and processed in 2001. Before storage, total germination was determined, amounting 96% (Gorobilje), 85% (Kacarevo) and 88% (Pancevo). Seed material was packed and kept on wooden shelves at ambient temperature. During the whole investigation period, the highest germination energy and total germination were obtained with the Gorobilje seed, then Pancevo seed, whereas the lowest values were obtained with seed from Kacarevo site. After the two years germination was lower in all variants, showing the same tendency in the third and fourth year. In the fifth year, germination dropped under 50% of the initial value while in the sixth year it was extremely low (5-14%, as dependent on locality and storage mode). The highest germination percentage was obtained with seed maintained in paper bags, then in juta bags, whereas the lowest germination, during the whole investigation period, was obtained with seed kept in PVC bags. Therefore, germination was affected by growth site and mode of storage, but the strongest effect had duration of storage.
