The experiment focused on examining the total number of fungi and actinomycetes, as well as the presence of the dominant genuses of those in the rhizosphere of wheat which was grown in soil with different degrees of compactness. Soil samples (chernozem) were taken from the central part of the plot and from its outer edge which was compacted (headland). In order to determine the effect of compacting below the ploughed layer of soil, too, samples were taken from two depths: 0-30 cm and 30-50 cm. The number of fungi in 1 g of absolutely dry soil ranged from 24 to 44 x 10**5. The fungi were more abundant at the depth of 0-30 cm and in the central part of the plot. The most dominant genera were Aspergillus, Penicillium, Fusarium, Alternaria and Trichoderma. The number of actinomycetes in 1 g of absolutely dry soil ranged from 19 to 36 x 10**5 and it was larger at the depth of 0-30 cm. Compacting did not have a negative effect on the number of actinomycetes. The most dominant genera of actinomycetes were Nocardia, Micromonospora and Microbispora.
