Analyzed in this paper are the results of investigation into various methods of tillage, from the aspect of environment protection, energy consumption and cost effectiveness. Effects on biological activity of conventional and conservation tillage, as well as the no-tillage sowing, are considered. Effects of biological activity on application of plought sets is emphasized from the viewpoint of soil treading and compaction. In addition, the authors consider the impact of the type of tillage on sugar beet yield. Reviewed are the results of a macro test which determined effects of various tillage methods in sugar beet production, primarily on yield and fuel consumption. The test results indicate significant differences (12%) in sugar beet yield, in favour of conservation tillage.
