The development of agriculture in the Republic of Serbia had a pronounced extensive character. As Serbia in currently possing through a process of transition, it is an opportunity for it to become competitive on the international market, however, tremendous efforts are needed to achieve that goal. The key vehicle for the rise of the national economy are investments in the development of science and technology, which must be based on knowledge. Serbia should focus its efforts on switching to specialized market economy in which the system of economy would be based on the application of latest scientific and technological developments and globalization and internationalization of development efforts. Serbia is a relatively small country, with a low gross national product and moderate resources available for investments in the development of science and technology. The current situation in agriculture and food-processing industries is characterized by limited growth which is too small to consider it conductive to sound economic development. This thesis gives an overview of all relevant elements, strategies and policies of growth and development of overall agricultural production, and it suggests how to locate finacial sources necessary to achieve competitive ability and to secure long- and short-term returns of the investments.
