Cicada Scaphoideus titanus is a new pest in vineyards of Serbia. In total, 32 cicada species were identified in vineyards of Serbia, out of which S. titanus was the most dominant. This cicada is present in most vineyard regions of Serbia, with a population density varying from low to extremely high. S. titanus spreads through vineyards 5-10 km a year. S. titanus is a monophagous species developing on grapevine exclusivelly. In Serbia S. titanus has one generation per year, overwintering in the egg stage. Larvae hatch from the second half of May till the end of June. The first adults appear in late June and are present in the field until September. Molecular analysis confirmed presence of Flavescence doree phytoplasma in S. titanus specimens from different vineyards regions in very high percentage (12.5-45%). S. titanus caused rapid spread of this phytoplasma in vineyards in short period of time. Grapevine golden yellowing is present in 40% of vineyard regions with noted tendency of increasing. Flavescence doree was detected for the first time in Serbia on the plant Old Man Beard (Clematis vitalba L.), which is regularly present bordering vineyards. Infected C. vitalba plants were found in all regions where Flavescence doree was detected in vineyards. Molecular analysis (PCR and RFLP) of 3 different genetic regions confirmed the presence of the same strain of Flavescence doree belonging to subgroup 16SrV-C in grapevines, C. vitalba and S. titanus. Flavescence doree was also detected for the first time in another cicada Dictyophara europaea, which is present on C. vitalba and grapevine in Serbia.
