In the geographical area of Novi Sad town and its surroudings, for the first time in the Republic of Serbia, a presence of the infection caused by Bartonella henselae in the feline population has been determined. The prevalence of specific antibodies of IgG class to the antigen Bartonella henselae in the feline population was 57%. All of the full feline blood samples involved in the research and cultivated on the nutritive medium have been negative, which is most probably due to the specific pathogenesis of this organism. The most common clinical manifestation with seropositive cats have been gingivitis and lymphadenopathy. The risk factors for the occurrence of the feline infection caused by Bartonella henselae were the way of cats living and their eventual predatory behaviour. The determined high seroprevalence to Bartonella henselae points out to a possible risk of infecting humans who are in close contact with cats. In that respect, further research had to encompass the development of the measures of preventing this infection.
