Anti-genotoxic effect of aloe vera gel(R) on the mutagenic action of ethyl methanesulfonate

The antimutagenic effect of aloe vera gel(R) was investigated using the Drosophyla sex-linked recessive lethal test (or SLRL test). In this assay, 3-day-old adults were treated with a direct-acting mutagen - ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS), which was the positive control. The other group of individuals of the same age was firstly treated with EMS, and then with aloe vera gel(R) (co-treatment). When co-treatment experiments with aloe were carried out, it was effective in reducing genotoxicity of the direct-acting mutagen.
