The effect of feeding propylene glycol on the functional activity of thyroid in fattening bulls

Nine growing bulls of Cholmogor breed at 8 month of age were assign to 3 groups which were fed during 3 periods the basal diet with various doses of propylene glycol: the 1st period (41 d): 0 (group 1, control), 80 ml (1,44 ml/kg; gr. 2) and 160 ml (2.85 ml/kg; gr. 3); the 2d period (42 d): 0, 200 (2.92 ml/kg) and 250 ml (3.54 ml/kg) respectively. During the 3th period (54 d) the level of crude protein intake in gr. 1 and 2 was increased from 12.7 to 14.2% by addition of soyabean meal with the dose of additive in gr. 2 equal to 3.12 ml/kg. The blood probes were obtained at the end of periods from jugular vein before feeding and at 1 and 3 h after feeding. The basal concentration of T3 and T4 in blood was increased in bull fed diets with propylene glycol during period 1 and 2 . During period 3 the level of T4 in bulls of gr. 2 increased at 1 and 3 h compared to control. Analysis of carcass composition revealed increased lean content and decreased the internal fat content. The data obtained suggest that feeding propylene glycol as glucogenic additive may be effective to ameliorate the quality of carcass in growing bulls.
