In very intensive milk production a lot of attention has to be given to optimize the nutrition of dairy cows, especially to nutrient supply of protein and energy. Nutrient imbalances in dairy cow nutrition lead to metabolic disorders, which result in lower immunity, productivity and lower fertility of animals. To determine and to suppress the consequences of deficient nutrition milk composition is often determined and evaluated as it reflects digestive and metabolic processes in dairy cows. Recently, more and more attention is given to milk urea content. Large variability in the content and various factors affecting it limit the reliability of the milk urea content to follow the processes related to the dairy cow nutrition. The question about the minimum and maximum levels which still do not cause any deviations from normal metabolic processes remains open. In this review paper the factors affecting milk urea contents, effects of urea on milk production, reproduction and animal health are briefly described. Furthermore, on the basis of most recent research, the optimum levels of milk urea are proposed.
