In this paper we are presenting results of dairy recording in 2008 and comparing them with previous years and spatially locating them. We are also presenting the effect of season on daily amount of milk and milk composition. By the end of the year 2008, there were 457,818 active animals registered on 38,559 agricultural holdings in Central Cattle Breeding Database at Agricultural Institute of Slovenia. On 30,799 agricultural holdings 170,412 cows were bred of which 107,239 dairy cows and 63,173 suckling cows. On 8,608 agricultural holdings market milk was produced and suckling cows were bred in 22,191 herds. In the recording scheme 83,602 cows were included, 82,875 dairy cows in milk recording and 727 cows in beef recording. In herds with market milk production the number of Black and White breed cows has been increasing while Brown breed has been decreasing. The average Slovene farm with dairy cows bred 12.5 dairy cows (17.0 in milk recording) and the farm with suckling cows only 2.8 cows per herd (17.3 in beef recording). The average milk yield in standard lactation in the year 2008 was 6,043 kg of milk with 4.05 % of fat and 3.26 % of protein. The protein percentage in 2008 increased or stayed on the same level in all breeds, compared to the year 2007. The highest increase was that of Simmental breed, i.e. by0.03 %. In comparison with 2007, the milk yield in 305 days increased by 27 kg, the content of fat decreased by 0.01 % and the protein increased by 0.01 %.
