With the lift of moratorium on genetically modified organisms (GMO) in European Union an increase of GMOs for food consumption is expected on EU market. Their safe use and traceability are prescribed in the newly accepted legislation. A GMO or its derived product can become authorized for food use in EU if it is deemed safe for human and animal health by the European Food Safety authority or scientific committee. If authorized, then labelling is required if the presence is not adventitious or technically unavoidable, as well as if the amount exceeds a legally defined threshold. Coexsistence means possibility that farmers have, to choose between conventional, organic and GM production, respecting all the regulation requirenments. Coexsistence should define the potential economic influence of GMO admixture in non-GMO products and all thenecessary measures for lowering their share. Traceability system is introduced to document and trace the GMOs along the whole supply chain from farm to fork. Validated methods for GMO detection in food has to be used by control laboratories. A validated event specific method for detection should be provided by the applicant with notification for a new GMO.
