From the autumn 2004 to the spring 2006, various catch crops were evaluated as the best soil cover surface and soil protection from erosion in a potato-growing region. It was found that in the given region rye meets best the requirement of protection surface and soil. In spring period this crop covered at average about 80% of soil surface in both observed years. The only disadvantage of this intercrop is that in spring it must be desiccated by appropriate herbicide or defrayed to the soil before sowing of main crops. However, the condition of the smallest difference in the number of plants during the observed years is met by the catch crop safflower. The timing of the catch-crop sowing can be considered as an important factor of sufficient growth of the organic matter. Intercrops showed high efficiency in the soil protection in the potato-growing region. They are also an important factor of the prevention of soil water erosion.
