Two-year field small-plot experiment was established at agricultural farm of Madunice in 2007 and 2008, respectively by block method on fluvizem soil type. Effect of nitrogen fertilization in combination with sulphur and iron on yield of onion and content of phenols was investigated in the experiment. Four varieties of onion (Kamal, Robin, Pueblo and Mundo) were examined under 4 treatments of fertilization: 1st treatment - control, 2nd treatment - fertilization with nitrogen, 3rd treatment - fertilization with nitrogen and sulphur, 4th treatment - fertilization with nitrogen, sulphur and iron. The highest average yield of onion was achieved with red onion of Robin (33.50 t per ha) on the treatment fertilized by nitrogen and sulphur (3rd treat.). On the contrary, the lowest average yield of fresh matter was achieved by white onion of Pueblo (25.78 t per ha) on the treatment with solo application of nitrogen. On the average of 2 years the solo application of nitrogen showed the greatest effect on content of phenols in onion of varieties Kamal (929.4 mg GA/1000 g of fresh weight) and Robin (864.7 mg GA/1000 g of fresh weight). Regarding phenols, white variety of Pueblo and yellow variety of Mundo were the most efficient when fertilized by nitrogen and sulphur in combination with iron (4th treat.).
