This study was designed to apply turmeric (Curcuma longa Linn.) extract in shrimp feed as a replacement for antibiotic and also as immnunoenhancer. TLC/densitometry indicated that the extract of turmeric in this study contained curcuminoids and volatile oil. Shrimp with average weight of 12 gms. were raised with feed containing different concentrations of turmeric extract at 0, 12.5, 25.0 and 50.0 mg/kg feed (ppm). Determined parameters included resistance against pathogenic Vibrio harveyi, immune functions and total count of bacteria and Vibrio spp. from the shrimp intestine. The result indicated the significantly better resistance against V. harveyi in shrimp fed with 12.5 and 25.0 ppm turmeric extract when compared with control (p LT 0.05). Study on immune functions revealed that shrimp fed with 25.0 and 50.0 ppm turmeric extract had significantly higher phenoloxidase activity than the control (p LT 0.05). While bactericidal activity of all turmeric extract-treated shrimp were significantly higher than the control (p LT 0.05). However, no significant difference was found amongst the value of total haemocyte count and percent phagocytosis (p GT 0.05). Study on total bacterial count in shrimp intestine clearly indicated the significantly lower number of bacteria and Vibrio spp. in all turmeric extract-treated shrimp when compared with the control (p LT 0.05).
