Response surface methodology was applied to determine the optimal conditions for the production of beta-glucanase by A. terreus ASKU10 in solid state fermentation with rice straw as raw material. The variables involved in this study were initial moisture content, corn steep liquors (CSL) concentration and KH2PO4. A second order quadratic model and response surface method showed that the optimal conditions for the maximum production of beta-glucanase were 72 percent of initial moisture content, 4.7 ml/10 g rice straw of CSL and 0.79 g/10 g rice straw of KH2PO4. The predicted and verified beta-glucanase activities under optimal conditions were 4206 and 4570 U/g dry substrate, respectively, which is 3.08-fold higher than that produced in original medium.
