Chlorophyll is the principal pigment in green plants. Recent studies have shown that chlorophyll and its derivatives can exhibit important health promoting functions, apart from their use as food and pharmaceutical colorants. The purpose of this study was to evaluate antioxidant activity of chlorophyll ethanolic extracts from Gnetum gnemon Linn. leaves. The investigation concerned three parts of raw materials such as an apex, young leave and old leave. Analytical assay of ethanolic leaves extracts included the chlorophyll content, the total phenolic content. The antioxidant properties were assessed by ABTS, DPPH and FRAP assays. The results showed that, the old leaves contained the highest levels of total chlorophyll content among the three parts (14.66 mg/g dw). All parts of fresh leaves did not significantly different in total phenolic content (26.68+-3.15- 33.87+-1.89 mg GAE/g dw). Antiradical activity determined in term of EC 50 by the DPPH radical scavenging method was highest in young leave and old leave (51.67+-1.19 and 52.23+-1.08 micro g/ml, respectively). Whereas, an apex showed the highest of both the ABTS radical scavenging and ferric reducing antioxidant power of 537.79+-6.17 and 364.66+-5.80 micro mol TE/g dw, respectively. The results suggest that chlorophyll ethanolic extracts from Gnetum gnemon Linn. leaves exhibit a potential for use as natural antioxidant.
