The aim of the investigation was to characterize Vicia tenuifolia var. elegans Guss. in connection with the possibilities for its practical use and preservation. The materials for the investigation were collected from Kalofer region during an expedition. As a result of the investigation morphological and caryological characterization of Vicia tenuifolia var. elegans Guss. was done. For the caryological investigation plants were grown in pots. Root tips were collected and treated with colchicines. Fixation was done and after that hydrolysis with 1N HCL under 60 grad. for 13 min. For optimum observation of the kariotype coloring with Shif was made. As a result of the investigation characterization of Vicia tenuifolia var. elegans Guss. was made. The basic conclusions are that this species has typical morphological caryological and biological characteristics. Vicia tenuifolia var. elegans Guss. has chromosome number 2n = 12, which is different from those of V. tenuifolia. Because of the valuable economic qualities such as high nutrition value, honey bearing, and due to the comparatively low agrotechnical requirements it can be used successfully as forage crop.
